This book contains everything I usually avoid like the plague. Jumping around in time, multiple story lines and POV and yet Jess Walter's story of Pasquale, Dee and half the western hemisphere grabbed my hand and never let go. This book is sad, funny, gripping and above all real. The narrative never falters and the multiple story lines, each unique, all come together, full circle. Walter's writing is almost poetic at times. So descriptive that I could feel the damp in the old gun bunker and see the ancient paintings on the walls. All the characters are people I wanted to listen too. My favorite was the addicted Pat with his over the top talent and self destructive streak fighting it out in dark, dank places. This is the best book I have read this year.
